(...) (View Projects) Rio Grande House Los Ranchos De Alburquerque

The Rio Grande House reads as a hymn to the horizon, opening toward the Sandia Mountains and the riparian edge of the nearby Rio Grande. Originally designed by Don Schlegel, mentor to Antoine Predock, this storied Mid-Century home sits along the Rio Grande flyway, where geese, ducks, cranes, and other migratory birds seasonally animate the eastern field. Thoughtfully opened up and reimagined by Predock studio, the house now unfolds across the several-acre farm tract, anchored by a new pool and deck, multi-car garage and workshop, and a foreground vineyard.

The ground-up renovation reinforces the home’s deep relationship to site, framing panoramic views of the Sandias and the ever-shifting rhythms of the surrounding landscape.  Social spaces extend outward to support an indoor/outdoor way of life. A pool and shaded entertaining deck beneath a solar trellis draw the architecture into the land, while concrete walls shape intimate garden rooms and a quiet vineyard picnic spot. Light and shadow dance across surfaces, connecting house, landscape, and horizon in a continuous dialogue.

The Home’s Mid-Century bones were retained and strengthened with new concrete and steel detailing. The owner’s lives – centered on family, food, wine, fitness and cars – guided the major interventions: an expanded kitchen and entertaining zone, media room, gym and dance studio, wine display room and vault, and the integrated garage and workshop.

The project honors its lineage while extending the architecture outward, where land, light, and life complete the work.
