(...) (View Projects) Ellipse Corrales, New Mexico

Nestled within a grove of iconic Rio Grand Cottonwoods, the Ellipse House is an ode to the New Mexico sky. Its gently canted matte zinc skin subtly reflects the atmosphere, shifting with the light and surrounding landscape. Twin staircases lead to the second level living spaces, elevated to capture expansive views.  A sweeping deck is carved into the ellipse, opening to a broad panorama across the cottonwood bosque to the craggy mountains beyond.  A “jewel box” of warm wood ceilings, floors, interior walls and casework creates a sense of intimacy and quite refuge.

The lower level contains quieter spaces, including a guest suite, office, and primary suite, which opens to a private spa courtyard oriented toward a monumental cottonwood tree.  Spa amenities include a sauna, plunge pool, white-noise fountain and fire pit.

The landscape design embraces the bucolic character of Corrales with a vineyard, vegetable gardens and flower beds.  A shou sugi ban-clad guest house evoking the simplicity of a farmhouse surrounds another iconic cottonwood.  The entry gate features a New Mexico cloud pattern, composed of hundreds of tiny clouds laser cut into weathered steel.
