Shadow House Santa Fe, New Mexico 2003
Overlooking the New Mexico’s Jemez Mountains, the Shadow House embodies the high desert’s ineffable space and introspective solace. Modern and traditional materials are woven together here with the foyer’s earthen oxblood floor encased in a warm tone cast concrete tower and contrasted to a glass prism designed to pick up the changing light from the sky above. The house is organized around the water court. Water rushes over ancient Chinese granite charging the living spaces of the house with reflected light and sound. An oversized cast-in-place concrete fireplace creates an anchor to the living room and a counterpoint to the earth and water. Amenities include a study and library, tatami meditation room and both master and guest suites. The master suite features a steam shower and heated stone lounging tub constructed from Basaltina. |
