Beyond the entry and the
check-in area, the Hotel is organized as a series of Western Trails, each
of which draws its form from the essential aspects of a theme. The design
of the Trails eschews conceptual and visual stereotypes in favor of atmospheres
which encourage multiple interpretations. Guests and the visiting public
are drawn into the project as readers and translators, applying their
biases and notions of the American West to these suggestive images.
The Trail of Artifacts suggests the remnants not only of ancient settlements
and historical events, but also of modern habitation, industrial development,
and tourism. The Trail of Water suggests geothermal activity, desert mirages,
intense irrigation, mountain streams, and suburban lawn sprinklers. The
Trail of Infinite Space portrays the expansiveness of the Western terrain
mirroring the infinity of the sky above; the edge between them, the horizon,
is ever visible and unattainable. Monument Valley is one of a variety
of landscapes unique to the American West. For many people it is the quintessential
one. The Trail of Monument Valley refers spectacular geologic formations
astride an endless plain while acknowledging their iconic value. In the
American West, legends derive from the act of taming both people and environments
and the larger-than-life characters who carried out the doctrine. The
‘campfire’, ‘hitching post’, ‘hanging tree’,
and ‘black hat/white hat’ duality underscore this theme in
the Trail of Legends.
